Public Transport and Fare Increases: Motion [Private Members] Dail Éireann — 2026-09-29 ============================================================ Rory Hearne (SD), Dublin North-West Is it? Why not have a completely public transport system then? Why get private operators? Surely we understand the failure that has happened in the UK with the privatisation of public services. We should have fares as low as possible. People have spoken about places like Luxembourg where free public transport has worked. We need to be reducing fares rather than increasing them and ensure that we have a proper public service. Talking of my constituency, something I have raised with the Minister before is how BusConnects has made it very difficult for people. On three of the new routes, 24, 23 and F1, Dublin Bus's own assessment of its performance shows that they have not met their punctuality targets. None of the three new routes that were brought in are reaching their punctuality targets. As my colleague mentioned, in one of the most congested cities in the world, this is illogical. --- Source: Houses of the Oireachtas.
